There’s just something magical about Friday night lights. The cool fall air, the lights on the field, the energy of the crowd—it all feels like home to me. This year ill be trading in Friday nights for Saturdays, as I cheer on my son when he takes the field with the rest of the Hope College football team, and I could not be more proud. But off the field, in my studio here in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I get to celebrate another kind of magic- you and your new baby. I love combining these two worlds, and let’s be honest: babies and footballs have a lot in common. They’re both unpredictable, and occasionally make you cry.
When families in Grand Rapids and West Michigan search for a newborn photographer, they’re often looking for something personal, something that reflects their family’s story. Sports are such a big part of who we are, and including a favorite team or sport in your baby’s photos makes the images feel even more special. Whether you’re into football, baseball, hockey, golf, or all of the above, your newborn session can reflect the things that make your family unique.
If you’re dreaming about newborn photos that are just a little sporty—we might be the perfect match.

How We Personalize Newborn Sessions
From football helmets to hockey jerseys, I can weave your favorite sports or hobbies into your newborn session without losing that simple, minimal, baby focused feel of my sessions. If you have something you love—like a small helmet, jersey, or even a golf ball—it can be included in a way that’s both creative and heartfelt.
I feel whole heartedly that these images aren’t just photos—they’re legacy pieces. The kind you print big, hang in the hallway, and smile at every time you walk past.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to incorporate sports or hobbies into your newborn portraits.
1) Incorporating your Alma Matter

A helmet from your alma matter is always a good way to show love for your favortie college team. This family are huge Notre Dame fans. Not only did we incorporate the helmet with the famous “play like a champion today” phrase, but the color palette from this session was centered on the green, gold, and blue colors found on the Fighting Irish football field.
2) Simple and Subtle

Always a good choice when you want make a subtle nod to some of your favorite hobbies of the past nad present.

3) A Gift To Grow Into

This sweet baby girl comes from a family full of Hockey lovers. She came into her newborn session with a fandom, and jersey, to grow into. How cute would it be to have images from both your newborn session and first year session wearing the same jersey
4) Home Runs and Cracker Jacks

Bonus points if Dad or Mom bring in their old high school glove. Extra bonus points if I get to eat cracker jacks after your session.
5) Cheering Loudly for the Hometown Heroes

Who doesn’t love an underdog story! And yes I do believe this is the year the Detroit Lions finally go to the Super Bowl. 😉
FAQs: Sports Props & Newborn Photography
Q: Can I bring my own sports gear?
Absolutely! Helmets, jerseys, balls, gloves, golf clubs—you name it. If it’s meaningful to you and fits safely in a setup, we’ll find a way to incorporate it.
Q: What if I don’t want a full session of just sports photos?
You don’t have to. We usually include one or two sporty setups alongside classic, timeless ones.
Q: Can we do a setup for mom’s favorite team and one for dad’s?
Heck yes. I’ve done sessions with a baby posed next to both college helmets and a split jersey. Let’s get creative.
Q: Can you Photoshop my team winning the championship?
Nice try. But I can definitely make your baby look like a total champ.

Final Thoughts
Your newborn photos should feel like you. For sports families in Grand Rapids, MI, that might mean a baby wrapped in your team colors, cuddled next to a helmet, or snoozing sweetly with a mini glove nearby.
My style is simple, warm, and most importantly, rooted in connection. If you’re looking for a Grand Rapids newborn photographer who knows how to keep things cozy, and personal—and who can totally talk sports while wrapping a baby—let’s make it happen.
