The Quiet Strength of Motherhood

A studio Maternity Reflection

There’s something about this season that always slows me down.

Maybe it’s the light.
Maybe it’s the stillness that creeps in between the chaos.
Or maybe it’s because every year, this time reminds me of a mother at the very beginning—carrying something sacred, unseen, and life-altering.

Christmas has always been a season of waiting. Of holding space for what hasn’t arrived yet. Of believing that something meaningful is growing quietly, even when the world feels loud and hurried. Pregnancy mirrors that in such a powerful way.

It pulls you inward.
It asks you to trust your body in ways you never have before.
It stretches you—physically, emotionally, spiritually—whether you’re prepared for it or not.

When I photograph studio maternity sessions, especially ones like this, I’m always thinking about that in-between space. The waiting. The not-yet. The surrender that comes with knowing everything is about to change, even if you can’t fully imagine how.

I often think about Mary in this season—not in a loud or literal way, but in a quiet, deeply human one. A woman carrying something bigger than herself. Holding uncertainty and hope at the same time. Living in the tension between fear and faith, strength and vulnerability, the ordinary and the extraordinary.

You don’t have to share my faith to understand that feeling.

Every mother knows it..

These images are not about perfection.
They’re about presence.

They’re about the softness of bare skin and the strength required to let yourself be seen. About trusting your body when it feels unfamiliar. About honoring a version of yourself that exists only briefly, yet changes you forever.

In my Grand Rapids studio, maternity photography isn’t about posing for the sake of posing. It’s about creating space—for quiet, for breath, for reflection. A pause in the middle of a season that asks so much of us.

Some sessions feel powerful and grounded.
Others feel gentle and introspective.
Sometimes there’s even room for playfulness—because joy belongs here too.

All of it is valid.
All of it matters.

I photograph maternity with newborn work always in mind. These images are not separate chapters—they are the opening pages of the same story.

One day, a newborn will rest where these hands are now.
One day, this waiting will become remembering.
And these photographs will hold proof of the strength it took to get there.

That’s why I believe so deeply in documenting this season in a simple, timeless way. Not because it’s trendy or expected—but because it’s fleeting, sacred in its own quiet way, and worthy of being remembered with honesty.

If you’re in this season—whether it feels empowering, overwhelming, joyful, heavy, or all of it at once—know this:

You don’t have to perform motherhood to be deserving of being photographed.
You just have to show up as you are.

That’s where the beauty lives.
