5 Questions to Ask Before Booking a Newborn Photographer in Grand Rapids
By Jackie | Honeywild Photography | Grand Rapids, Michigan

Choosing a newborn photographer in Grand Rapids is one of those decisions that feels a lot bigger than it sounds.
You’re not just picking someone to take pictures. You’re choosing someone to be in the room with your brand new baby — someone you’re trusting to handle them safely, to make you feel comfortable, and to capture something you’re going to look at for the rest of your life.
That’s a big deal. And you deserve to feel completely confident in whoever you choose.
So whether you’re considering Honeywild or simply doing your research, here are the five questions I’d encourage every Grand Rapids family to ask before booking their newborn session — and what to look for in the answers.

1. What newborn safety training do you have?
This is the most important question on the list, and honestly, it’s the one most parents forget to ask.
Newborns are not props. The poses you see in beautiful newborn galleries — the “froggy” pose, the curled-up basket shots, the tiny baby tucked into a bowl — all of these require specific training to execute safely. In the wrong hands, they can cause real harm.
A well-trained newborn photographer will be able to explain how they’ve learned to handle, position, and support newborns safely. They should mention composite images (where multiple photos are merged so baby is always supported), their approach to temperature in the studio, and how they respond if a baby becomes unsettled or uncomfortable.
What to listen for: Confidence, specificity, and a clear emphasis on baby’s comfort over getting the shot. If a photographer’s answer is vague or they seem caught off guard by the question, keep looking.
At Honeywild, newborn safety isn’t something I think about during the session — it’s something I’ve built into every single part of how I work. Your baby is never in an unsafe position, and I will always stop before I’d ever compromise their comfort.
2. What does your studio environment look like?
Studio newborn photography in Grand Rapids offers something that in-home sessions simply can’t — complete control over the environment. Temperature, lighting, cleanliness, equipment, props — all of it is consistent, intentional, and designed specifically for newborns.
But not all studios are created equal. Before you book, ask to see photos of the actual studio space. Is it warm and inviting? Does it feel calm? Is it clean and professional?
What to listen for: A photographer who can describe their studio environment in detail — the temperature they keep it at (warmer than you’d think — around 80 degrees for posed newborn work), the type of lighting they use, and what props and wraps are available.
The Honeywild studio is designed to be the calmest room your family walks into during one of the most overwhelming seasons of your life. It’s warm, it’s quiet, it smells good, and from the moment you walk in — you exhale.

3. How do you handle a fussy or unsettled baby?
Here’s something every first-time parent needs to hear: there is no such thing as a baby who “ruins” a newborn session. Every single baby is different. Some sleep through the whole thing. Some need to eat four times. Some cry for the first 45 minutes before finally settling into the most peaceful poses you’ve ever seen.
An experienced newborn photographer has seen all of it — and they know exactly what to do.
Ask your photographer how they typically handle a fussy baby. Do they rush to finish the session? Do they charge extra for going over time? Do they make you feel like your baby is a problem to be solved?
What to listen for: Patience. Flexibility. A genuine “we go at baby’s pace, always” answer — not a policy about overtime fees.
I have genuinely never met a baby I couldn’t settle. It just takes time, warmth, the right positioning, and a photographer who isn’t watching the clock. Your session at Honeywild has no time pressure. We’re done when your baby says we’re done.

4. What is included in your session fee?
Newborn photography pricing in Grand Rapids varies wildly — and so does what’s actually included. Some photographers charge a low session fee and then sell you digital images à la carte afterward. Others include a set number of images. Others include everything.
Neither approach is wrong. But you deserve to know exactly what you’re paying for before you hand over a deposit.
Ask specifically:
- How many images are included?
- Are digital files included, or do you pay per image?
- Are prints or products included, or available separately?
- Is there a travel fee or studio fee on top of the session fee?
- What is your turnaround time for the finished gallery?
What to listen for: Transparency. A photographer who clearly explains their pricing without making you feel like you’re deciphering a contract is someone who respects your time and your budget.
At Honeywild, I offer three clearly defined packages starting at $300, so you know exactly what you’re getting before you ever book. No surprises. No hidden fees. No pressure to upgrade.

5. What does the experience look like from booking to gallery delivery?
This one is worth asking because it tells you so much about how a photographer runs their business — and how you’ll feel as their client from start to finish.
A photographer who has a clear, thoughtful answer to this question is someone who has thought carefully about your experience, not just the images. They should be able to walk you through what happens after you book, how they communicate with you before the session, what the session day itself looks like, and how and when your gallery is delivered.
What to listen for: A clear timeline, proactive communication, and a sense that they’ve genuinely thought about how you’ll feel at every stage — not just on session day.
I’ve recently overhauled my entire process to deliver a more streamlined, intentional experience from start to finish. I am constantly asking myself how I can better serve my clients and implementing what I learn. Because I believe working with a photographer should feel just as good as the final images — maybe even better.

One more thing before you book
The right newborn photographer for your family is one whose work you love and whose process makes you feel completely taken care of.
Don’t just look at their Instagram. Ask questions. Pay attention to how quickly they respond, how clearly they communicate, and whether you feel like a priority or an afterthought.
You’re about to have a baby. You have enough to figure out.
Your photographer should be the one thing you don’t have to worry about.
